Wood Products & Building Materials
Truss, Cabinet & Lumberyard Insurance in Northern California
Oakview Insurance Services helps truss manufacturers, cabinet and millwork businesses, and lumberyards in Northern California review commercial insurance for their property, employees, products, equipment, and delivery operations. Coverage options depend on the work performed, business location, and underwriting requirements.
Based in Yuba City and independent since 2010, we work with specialty insurance markets for wood-product manufacturing and building material businesses. Northern California is our primary base; we can also review eligible businesses elsewhere in California.
Why Wood Products Businesses Need a Specific Coverage Review
Woodworking and distribution bring together fire, machinery, product, employee, and delivery exposures. A policy review should start with how your business operates, including dust collection, finishing products, outdoor stock, material handling, and work performed away from your premises.
Combustible dust and fire
Sawdust, finishing products, and stored lumber affect property underwriting. Tell us about dust collection, housekeeping, spray finishing, fire protection, and indoor or outdoor storage so those operations are part of the review.
Equipment and material handling
Production machinery, forklifts, mobile yard equipment, and delivery vehicles perform different jobs. Property, equipment breakdown, inland marine, and commercial auto should reflect how and where each asset is used.
Products after they leave the shop
A truss, cabinet, or structural component may be in use long after sale. Products-completed operations coverage may help with covered bodily injury or property damage claims, subject to policy terms. Replacing your defective product, recalls, and design-related financial losses are separate questions.
Truss, Cabinet & Lumberyard Businesses We Review
Our specialty-market approach spans wood-product manufacturing, retail, wholesale, and distribution. These categories help describe the work we review; they are not a guarantee of acceptance. Tell us about every part of your operation, including manufacturing, importing, deliveries, and installation.
Truss & structural component manufacturers
- Wood truss manufacturing
- Door and window assembly
- Stair manufacturing
- Fence manufacturing
What we review: Tell us whether your business designs or engineers components, manufactures to another firm's specifications, delivers products, or installs them. Review products liability, design-related exposures, production equipment, and downtime together.
Cabinet, millwork & finished wood-product businesses
- Cabinet and casegoods manufacturing
- Moulding and millwork
- Wood flooring manufacturing
- Furniture manufacturing, with or without upholstery
- Countertop manufacturing
- Woodworking and woodturning shops
- Store fixture and display manufacturing
- Wood carving and picture frame manufacturing
What we review: Cabinet-shop insurance should reflect finishing operations, dust collection, machinery, customer-owned property, and any showroom or installation work. Explain how goods move from your shop to the customer's location.
Lumberyards, dealers & distributors
- Retail and wholesale lumberyards; lumber brokers and jobbers
- Building material dealers and home centers
- Hardwood flooring and hardware stores
- Engineered wood product and imported wood distributors
- Cabinet showrooms and concentration yards
- Roofing, siding, and drywall distributors
- Fence distributors and retailers
- Masonry yards and plastic/composite lumber dealers
What we review: Lumberyard insurance should account for outdoor stock, seasonal inventory changes, forklifts, loading areas, customer traffic, and deliveries. Tell us whether you resell, import, alter, or manufacture any of the materials you supply.
Not sure where your business fits?
A combined shop, showroom, and yard may need one coordinated review. The appetite guide includes a wider range of operations than the examples above. We will review the current requirements for your business.
Coverage Options for Wood Manufacturers & Lumberyards
Oakview can coordinate a review of the following coverage lines. Your final program may involve more than one policy or insurer, and availability depends on underwriting and your location.
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to read all three columns.
| Coverage line | What to review | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial property | Shop and warehouse buildings, machinery, finished goods, and stock. Review outdoor storage, valuation, fire protection, and peak inventory rather than assuming every weather event is covered. | Manufacturers and dealers |
| General liability | Premises and operations liability, including customer traffic, loading areas, and covered bodily injury or property damage claims. | All three business types |
| Products and completed operations | Review covered injury or property damage claims involving sold products or completed installation work, including limits and exclusions. Product replacement and recall are separate questions. | Manufacturers, installers, and dealers |
| Workers' compensation | Review production, yard, retail, delivery, and installation employees. Placement can be coordinated separately from property and liability coverage. | Businesses with employees |
| Commercial auto | Liability and selected physical damage coverage for business vehicles. Disclose delivery radius, drivers, hired vehicles, and whether you haul your own goods or for others. | Operations with delivery vehicles |
| Materials in transit / cargo review | Goods being delivered need their own property/transit review. Motor truck cargo, shipper interests, and coverage for your own inventory are not interchangeable. | Manufacturers, distributors, and yards |
| Inland marine / mobile equipment | Forklifts, related mobile equipment, off-premises property, and installation materials. Review fixed machinery under the appropriate property and breakdown coverage. | Manufacturing, yards, and installers |
| Equipment breakdown | Review covered mechanical or electrical breakdown of production and other insured equipment, applicable limits, and exclusions. | Equipment-dependent operations |
| Business income and extra expense | Lost income and eligible extra expenses after a covered loss. Review waiting periods, restoration time, and whether equipment-breakdown-related income coverage applies. | Manufacturers and dealers |
| Umbrella / excess liability | Additional liability limits above specified underlying policies, subject to the policy's schedule and exclusions. | Operations with larger liability exposures |
| Cyber and employment practices liability | Review data breach and cyber events, and employment-related claims, as separate exposures with their own coverage terms. | Businesses with systems, customer data, or employees |
Design, product replacement, and supplier downtime
If you design trusses or components, manufacture to specifications, rely on a key supplier, or face a product recall exposure, tell us. We can evaluate whether manufacturers errors and omissions, recall expense, or dependent-property business income coverage should be explored separately. These are review topics, not an assurance that the core program includes them.
For businesses that install products, our contractors insurance page explains additional job-site exposures. Visit our commercial insurance overview for the broader business coverage review.
A Local Agency for Your Full Business Insurance Review
We start with what you make, sell, store, deliver, and install, then review the policies together. The goal is to identify where coverage, limits, classifications, and operations need attention before you make a placement decision.

Wood Products & Lumberyard Insurance Questions
What kinds of wood industry businesses can you insure?
We review coverage for truss and structural component manufacturers, cabinet and millwork/moulding manufacturers, and retailers, wholesalers, and distributors such as lumberyards, building material dealers, and hardware stores. Eligibility depends on your operations, location, loss history, and underwriting requirements.
Do you cover manufacturers that also install their products on-site?
We can review insurance options for manufacturers that also deliver or install their products. Installation is a separate exposure from shop manufacturing. Tell us what your crews install, where they work, and whether you use subcontractors so we can evaluate eligibility and coverage requirements.
What areas of Northern California do you serve?
Our primary focus includes Stockton and the Sacramento Valley, Yuba-Sutter and Chico, Redding and Siskiyou County, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, and the Sierra foothills. We can also review eligible businesses elsewhere in California. Service availability and program eligibility depend on the operation and location.
Can you review both my shop and retail yard together?
Yes. We can review manufacturing, retail, storage, and delivery operations together. Depending on the business and insurer, coverage may involve a package policy or multiple coordinated policies. A showroom, second location, or installation crew should be included in the review.
My business is not on your list. Can you still help?
Possibly. The appetite guide includes a wide range of wood-product operations, including pattern shops, decoy manufacturers, church pew and altar manufacturers, and truck or trailer flooring manufacturers. Tell us what you make, sell, deliver, or install so we can review the current appetite for your business.
What coverage lines should a wood-products business review?
Start with commercial property, general liability, and workers' compensation, then review equipment breakdown, business income and extra expense, commercial auto, materials in transit, inland marine, and umbrella or excess liability. Cyber and employment practices liability may also be relevant. Coverage may be coordinated across multiple policies and insurers.
Does property insurance cover a machine breaking down?
A fire loss and a mechanical or electrical breakdown are different exposures. Equipment breakdown coverage should be reviewed separately from property and mobile equipment coverage. Lost income from a breakdown also requires the applicable business income coverage and a covered trigger; ordinary wear and tear is not the same as a covered breakdown.
Does products liability pay to replace a defective truss or cabinet?
Products liability may help with covered bodily injury or property damage caused by your product. It does not automatically pay to repair or replace the defective product itself, reimburse a recall, or cover a customer's financial loss. We review those distinctions, especially when your business designs, specifies, manufactures, or installs products.
What affects the cost of truss, cabinet, or lumberyard insurance?
Pricing depends on your operations, sales, payroll, property and inventory values, machinery, fire protection, loss history, vehicles, delivery radius, installation work, and coverage limits. A current description of your business helps us evaluate appropriate options rather than quote from a business label alone.
What information helps you prepare a quote?
Useful starting information includes your locations, products and operations, annual sales and payroll, building and equipment values, typical and peak inventory, vehicles, installation or subcontractor activities, current policies, and available loss runs. You can start the request before every document is ready; we will explain what is needed next.
